Mini Quiz
Which program is right for you?
Try these coding questions to find out.
Can you code this?
Patient has diabetic cataracts
Yes? Consider Beyond
the Basics
No? Take the Boot Camp
Do you know this?
What does it mean that coding first does not mean coding
primary?
Coding first vs. coding primary? In
the instance of etiology and manifestation, the manifestation
may be the primary reason for care, but coding guidelines
dictate that the etiology be coded first and the manifestation
is coded second. So, the etiology is coded first, but
it’s not primary.
Yes? Consider Beyond the Basics
No? Take the Boot Camp
If you’re not sure…
- what these conventions in the ICD-9 manual mean – italics, bolds, and, with, or…
- how to use non-essential modifiers like (chronic)…
- of the basic ICD-9 coding guidelines…
- why polyneuropathy due to diabetes is coded 250.6, 357.2 and what rules dictate that…
The Coding Boot Camp is the program for you! See agenda
If you can answer these easily (using your code book is OK)…
- A patient has an ulcer on the lower
leg where he left a heating pad and burned his leg. Because
of atherosclerosis (with claudication), the second degree
burn never healed. The focus of care is care of the ulcer/burn.
How do you code this?
Answer: 1. 945.24 (burn of lower leg), 440.21 (arteriosclerosis w/ claudication), E924.8 (burn by electrical appliance. - Patient has long-term paralysis with
new cystostomy. The patient also has chronic UTI and will
be on antibiotics indefinitely. Focus of care is cleaning
and teaching primary caregiver care of cystostomy. Which code(s)
do you report?
Answer: 2. V55.5 (attention to cystostomy), 599.0 (UTI), 344.9 (paralysis), V58.62 (long-term use of antibiotics).
…you’re probably ready for the Beyond the Basics program! See agenda
Note: Even if you didn’t get these answers completely correct, if you understand why they are coded this way and the coding rules behind them, you should still consider attending the Beyond the Basics program.
Should you attend the OASIS Payment Questions and
Your Coding Accuracy workshop?
This session is neither beginner nor advanced OASIS training,
but instead, focuses on the payment questions and how they
interact with coding.
Any coder or OASIS worker can benefit from understanding
the interaction of the OASIS and coding, especially since
they have become more significant in 2008. This is also a
great training opportunity. Important: This program
is only being offered in the Indianapolis and Nashville sessions. See
agenda
If you’re still uncertain which program you should attend,
feel free to email us at conf@decisionhealth.com.
Please list your relevant experience with home health coding
and OASIS.
